In my portfolio of images I have showed a variation of my college work and also images I’ve taken for my own pleasure. They include portraits, macro photography, colour, black and white, still life and so on. I have a keen interest in all photography, but in particular documentary photography. I like how with photojournalism you never know what you will end up taking a picture of, I like the simplicity of just going out with my camera and not knowing what situations you are going to come across.
Photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank were essential to the development of photojournalism and street photography, especially Cartier-Bresson and his theory of the decisive moment, which explained in his words is ‘the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression."
Although I really enjoy photojournalism, I want to explore other areas of photography, which hopefully I can achieve whilst on your course. I would like to focus on areas such as portraits, landscapes and more abstract, experimental photography. This will allow me to obtain a more creative approach to my work and allow me to express myself without restraint. I have slightly ventured into these areas at A-Level, but not as deeply as I want to at degree level.
After the university course I would like to progress into a career in photography, at the moment I would like a job working for a well know publication or respected photography agency, but hopefully the course will show me other interesting career choices through photography, and I am very open minded about my final photographic direction after university.
